Just like any other walls, drywalls will need repair eventually. Even the best built houses out there will develop a few drywall cracks here and there due to soil settlement — usually around the windows and doors.

Fortunately, drywall cracks aren’t necessarily a cause for concern but they do certainly look annoying. In this post, we’ll talk about how to repair them right away so they don’t come back.

Tools and Materials Needed:

• Joint compound
• Sandpaper
• Putty knife
• Joint mesh tape
• Paint primer
• Interior paint
• 6” drywall knife

Repair Guide:

Step 1: Score the crack.

Though it may seem counterintuitive, not scoring the crack will give you a hard time filling the crack with jointing compound.

Using your putty knife, score the crack starting at the edges. Make sure to be modest with your hand work as you don’t want to further damage the crack as it is.

Step 2: Prepare the mesh tape.

Preparing the mesh tapes means that you’ll cut the mesh tape ideally in one length that will cover the length of the crack. If one length of mesh tape is not possible, cut to a minimum as much as possible to prevent bumps, creases, and folds when lapping mesh tapes.

Step 3: Spread the joint compound.

Stir up the compound as per manufacturer’s recommendation, then put a thin layer of joint compound over the cracked section. Move quickly as joint compounds dry rapidly.

Step 4: Install joint mesh tape.

Using your 6” drywall knife, press the tape over the joint compound. Make sure that the tape is bound between the crack and joint compound. Smoothen the tape just once or twice because too much knife-work can tear the tape.

Step 5: Spread additional joint compound and lightly sand it once it dries.

Step 6: Spread final layer of joint compound.

Ideally, joint compound must have 3 layers with the final layer acting as a finishing to hide bumps, creases, and folds. At this stage, you may want to spread carefully and evenly to come up with a nice touch.

Step 7: Clean the surface by wiping it with a damp cloth.

Step 8: Painting works.
